Sanding
Sanding is a process used to smooth out or accurately and cleanly remove material from a project. It can be done in 3 different ways, Garnet Paper (also known as Sand Paper), File or a Sanding Machine. Sanding machines are more commonly used to remove the bulk of material, whereas Garnet Paper is manually done to make a material smooth. Files are handheld tools which remove more material than Garnet Paper and are used in smaller applications where machines cannot fit. There are Hazards, Risks and Management Procedures that need to be considered when sanding and they are:
Hazards:
● Pinch Point
● Overheating
● Rough Surface
● Dust & Noise
● Foreign Materials
● Obstuctions in the workplace
● Revolutions Per Minute (RPM)
This is a Cork Block. Garnet Paper is wrapped around it so the project is sanded evenly.
This is Garnet Paper. The roughness of it ranges from 20 - 2000. The higher the number, the smoother it will make your project. The lower numbered papers are used to remove more material.
Risks:
● Damage to Machine/Job
● Self Harm / Harm to others
● Dust Inhalation
● Entanglement
● Scraping Body Parts
This is a Belt Sander. It is used to remove the bulk of materials off a project. The Garnet Paper belt spins at extreme speeds to remove material quickly.
This is an Orbital Sander. It has a peice of Garnet Paper on the base which vibrates rapidly to remove material off a project.
Management:
● Confidence
● PPE
● Adjusting Table Height
● Communication
● Keeping Fingers Clear of Rough Surfaces
This is a Disk Sander. It is mainly used to trim the edges of a peice to get it to the desired length.
This is an Oscillating Spindle Sander. It is used for sanding curved surfaces.
